This is a 9-month position that reports to the Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences. WTAMU is located in Texas Panhandle, one of the largest cattle feeding areas in the world (6 million head annual), and one of the most prolific crop-producing areas in the world, (14 million acers of cultivated crop land), both of which are multi-billion dollars industries. The highest total value crops in the region are wheat, corn, ensilage, hay, sorghum and cotton. The position will focus on the various aspect of horticulture but not limited to; greenhouse/nursery, horticulture crops, landscaping, and retail sales and provide an academic track beyond the current agronomy based program for the recruitment and to increase the enrollment potential for WT at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. WTAMU is a four-year academic institution with more than 9,000 students including more than 1150 students in the department granting Bachelor, Master of Science, and Doctoral degrees. Qualifications + PhD in Plant Soil and Environmental Science, preferably Horticulture, or closely related field + Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service + Experience in horticulture, vegetable production, nursery/greenhouse management, or similar research, specifically within semi-arid environments + Commitment to an interdisciplinary team approach to education and research + Interpersonal skills, and desire to establish working relationships with external constituents in the horticulture/plant and soil science industry + Demonstrated experience in securing external funding and scholarly publication + Excellent written and oral communication skills + A record of leadership and management in horticulture teaching and research Responsibilities + Teach a minimum of 9 hours per long semester. Teaching opportunities may include face-to-face and/or online formats. + Expand current plant and soil science offerings into the area of horticultural science for both undergraduate and graduate education, research and service in the Texas Panhandle and surrounding areas. + Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in all areas of horticulture and related PSES disciplines; + Advise MS and PhD graduate students in various areas of Plant, Soil and Environmental Sciences, especially those related to horticulture; + Develop a research program that will lead to solutions for the horticulture industry of the greater High Plains area; + Secure extramural funding for research and scholarly activities; + Present and interpret research findings at conferences, symposia, and workshops; + Publish research findings and syntheses in refereed journals; + Develop collaborative programs with scientists in other agencies, universities, and the horticulture/agriculture industry; + Develop strong industry relationships with horticulture/nursery/landscape/turf/vegetable/etc. professionals in the region/state; and + Foster employment opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students + Other duties as assigned.
